Campo del Cielo crystal
In 1576, the governor of a province in northern Argentina commissioned the military to search for a huge mass of iron, which he had heard that natives used for their weapons. A few samples were collected, and described as having unusual purity. Approximately 100 tonnes of fragments have been discovered, including the 30.8 tonne Gancedo meteorite - the third largest single piece meteorite ever found on the Earth! Campo del Cielo crystals are created by immersing larger pieces of the meteorite in liquid nitrogen, and then shattering to cleave them along crystal faces before tumbling to polish off any sharp edges. They’re a great first meteorite, and part of the largest recorded meteorite find ever! Often used in jewelry making, they’re a stunning look into the heart of a huge meteorite that impacted the Earth more than four thousand years ago. Price includes p&p in UK. 1cm cube for scale.
